The UN World Urbanization Prospects Report states that by 2050, 68% of the world’s population is expected to be living in urban areas, adding another 2.5 billion people to the urban population. 40 billion m2 of construction demand is expected over the next 20 years. The construction industry is responsible for 40% of global carbon emissions, and manufacturing industrial materials such as concrete and steel contributes up to one-third. Emerging design and fabrication technologies with natural materials such as earth and timber present an alternative to reducing the environmental impact of the construction industry.

What are the opportunities and challenges of building with natural materials today?

Can emerging technologies support the uptake of it by the mainstream construction industry?
